Bonnie Kay Hotopp, 90, a longtime Racine,MN resident, passed away peacefully , her family by her side, on Saturday (June 28, 2025) of natural causes, at her home.
Bonnie Kay McWhirter was born on October 23, 1934 in Amery, WI to Robert and Ruth (Prieb) McWhirter. She moved with her family to Racine Twsp,MN where she grew up and attended Stewartville schools and later went on to earn her GED. Bonnie was married on September 8, 1951 at the Racine United Methodist Church to Floyd Hotopp. The couple moved to Floyd’s farmstead in rural Racine, where they raised their 9 children and lived for many years. Bonnie was a homemaker and was employed as a unit secretary with Mayo Clinic for many years until her retirement. Floyd was a mechanic for many years in the Racine area with Thompson Implement and also with Schultz Implement in St. Charles,MN. Mr. Hotopp died on September 5, 1999. Bonnie moved into Racine where she has continued to make her home.
She was a longtime active member of Racine United Methodist Church where she volunteered with it’s Ladies Aid activities including church suppers, funeral luncheons and fund raisers and served in various capacities on church boards. She was an avid reader and enjoyed going on trips with Floyd to visit her children. She loved time spent with family, especially at the holidays and for family reunions.
Bonnie is survived by 3 daughters and 5 sons –Timothy (Joselyn) Hotopp of Racine; Rebecca ( Larry) Zielsdorf of Zumbrota,MN; Jill ( Lars) Nygren of Wanamingo,MN; Jett Hotopp of Spring Valley,MN; Daniel ( Laurie) Hotopp of Lincoln,NE; Rennie Hotopp of Racine; Aimee (Jeremy) Garbers of Hayfield,MN; Tyler ( Liz) Hotopp of Orlando,FL; 17 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; 1 sister Diana (Leroy) Fors of Orlando, FL and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd and Daughter Amber Hotopp, sister - Kathy Giere and brother - Glenn Pembleton.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 1 to 3:00 PM on Sunday (July 6, 2025) at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville. A private family burial and committal service will take place at Hamilton Cemetery in rural Racine,MN. Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville.
