Gary Lynn Swenson, 83, of Spring Valley, MN died Friday (November 22, 2019) following a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s Disease, at Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester, MN.
Gary was born November 13, 1936 in Spring Valley to Olaf “Ole” and Alice (Medberry) Swenson. He grew up in rural Spring Valley, attended school there, graduating from Spring Valley H.S. in 1954. Gary was married on December 29, 1960 in Cresco, IA to Diane M. Wendl. Following their marriage, they lived in Rochester for a number of years. They were later divorced. Gary was employed as an insurance agent, real estate agent and truck driver. Gary was a past member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Rochester. He enjoyed playing poker, reading, camping and time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
Gary is survived by a son and 2 daughters: Dean (Lisa) Swenson of Dodge Center, MN; Kathleen (Paul) Cernohous of Olathe, KS and Jodi (Keith) Sweatt of Chaska, MN; 10 grandchildren - Dean Laganiere, Donovan Laganiere, Bailey (Ben) Haag, Gina Cernohous, Paige Cernohous, Rochelle Hovde, Leo Cernohous, Kyleigh Sweatt, Kaitlyn Sweatt & Kira Sweatt. A great grandson: Graham Haag. Gary was preceded in death by his grand-daughter: Cassie, his parents and sister: Janice Jacobson.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday (November 29, 2019) at Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville. Honoring Gary’s wishes, there will be no service and a private family burial at Frankford Cemetery in rural Spring Valley, MN. Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville.
